The Bikeriders (2024)

The Bikeriders is a crime drama about a club of bike enthusiasts who turn towards crime.

I really enjoyed Midnight Special because of Jeff Nichols, and when I saw the trailer, even before I knew it was him, I thought this movie looked good. Nichols also wrote and directed Mud. I like it when production studios just leave filmmakers alone to make a movie you get invested in. There were a few editing choices that I had issues with but none of them were directorial.

The film sets up Jodie Comer as the main character who is Austin Butler's Benny's love interest. You might remember Comer from an underrated Ridley Scott film called The Last Duel. I forgot that she was the love interest in Free Guy. Both Comer and Butler play believable and real characters. The same goes for Tom Hardy. Their relationships all make sense and there's only one issue.

Mike Faist is the worst actor in the film. Every scene takes you out of the story. I'm not sure why he got cast but he's the one thing I would have taken out of the film. I'm sure he's a nice person in real life but go back to acting school. He hasn't been a good part of any film I've seen him in.

The film got me invested in the characters and I figured out the ending rather early. Result: B-

Roma (2018)

Roma  is about the life of an upper-class family living in Mexico seen through the eyes of a servant in the 1970s. Written and directed by Alfonso Cuarón . Cuarón was born in Mexico and has even said that this film depicts a lot of his childhood. It certainly has a feel like Y Tu Mama Tambien. More average moviegoers might recognize his name from the movie Gravity where he won his first Oscar. He also did the underappreciated Children of Men. The cast is mostly unknowns. The main character is named Cleo and is played by Yalitza Aparicio . She is wonderful and stoic. She is reserved in her emotions to make them more impactful when they do rise to the surface. Her character has to put up with a lot of shit, literally. Her life goes from bad to worse throughout the movie. At the end of the movie, you'll be attached to this maid. The first part is hard to watch because it's just setting up future moments. At the time it just feels like you're watching a ...

Smile 2 (2024)

Smile 2  is the sequel to the 2022 horror film where a demon terrorizes you for seven days after you witness a brutal death. Parker Finn  is back to write and direct the film because of how well it did at the box office. These movies are cheap to make but I think this time around word of mouth won't put butts into seats. The formula is there and he does well to direct the film but the lack of scares really hurt the film for horror fans who will be disappointed. Naomi Scott  plays the main character Skye, but you might not recognize her since she looks so different than she did when she played Jasmine in the Disney live-action adaptation of Aladdin . She was better in Power Rangers  to be fair. Her acting has improved drastically since those two though. The film suffers from poor writing. It shows all the scary bits in the trailer and lingers on scenes that horror fans don't really pay to see. Also, there is a ton of product placement. Result: B-

Last Night in Soho (2021)

Last Night in Soho is a horror movie, surprisingly. It's also directed by Edgar Wright. Is this a dream? Someone, please make sense to me how this got made. Written and directed by Edgar Wright , Soho is about a fashion designer who without spoiling the film starts to uncover a murder mystery from the 1960s and has to make sense of it all. It has everything you want from Wright's  transitions and self-references but missing the comedy of his previous films. I feel like this movie was made on a dare much in the same way American Graffiti was made.  Thomasin McKenzie  has really developed as an actress both in her ability to convey emotion but also with how she loses herself in the role. The last time I saw her was in Jojo Rabbit and True History of the Kelly Gang and I look forward to The Power of the Dog later this year. She plays the main character and does a wonderful job with her accent too. I can't go into detail about what happens to her without spoiling the...
