Rental Family (2025)

Rental Family is about an American living in Japan as an actor who falls into an odd acting gig as a surrogate family member or something similar for other people to cope or find meaning in relationships.

Written and directed by Hikari, who brought us the critically acclaimed movie 37 Seconds which was sent straight to streaming back in 2020, so don't feel bad if you've never heard of it. This time around she's getting a proper release. Her direction is very artistic and the character writing is great. There are even moments of laughter in this drama.

Brendan Frasier plays the main character a "token white guy" as the movie puts it. He is on a role with these select films. I'm excited for a Mummy reunion and his return with The Whale was great. This wasn't as well acted as The Whale, but it was still good.

I'm not too sure this will get nominated for any Oscar or do well at the box office, but it was still good. Result: B

We Bury The Dead (2026) is a slow burn post apocalypse film centered on grief more than horror. Directed by Zak Hilditch , best known for smaller projects like 1922 and Rattlesnake , this is his first step into a larger American production. You can feel the restraint in the direction, sometimes to the film’s benefit and sometimes to its detriment. The pacing is deliberate, almost stubbornly so, and while the mood is consistent, it rarely escalates into anything memorable. Daisy Ridley , best known for Star Wars: The Force Awakens , carries the film as a woman searching for her missing husband who may or may not have turned into a zombie. Ridley is solid and emotionally grounded, doing the best she can with minimal dialogue and long stretches of quiet reflection. Her performance is never the problem. Happy Gilmore 2 (2025)

Happy Gilmore 2 is directed by Kyle Newacheck , known for his work on Workaholics and Murder Mystery . He brings some of that chaotic energy to this sequel, but he’s held back by a script from Tim Herlihy , a frequent Sandler collaborator. Herlihy’s writing feels like it’s trying too hard to be modern, often missing the charm that made the original a cult classic. Adam Sandler has his prime days in the past and his goofy persona is hard to grasp again now that the novelty has worn off. He plays an alcoholic in the film, which was supposed to give him some sort of character arc but it just came across as weak. Julie Brown returns and still brings a grounded energy to the cast. Her chemistry with the rest of the ensemble feels natural, and she’s one of the more consistent performers here despite her minimal use. Phantom Thread (2017)

Phantom Thread (2017) is written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. In the 50s, a British dressmaker falls in love with a waitress only to have her find out that he's very picky about most things. The problem when watching "artistic" movies is that there's going to be symbolism almost throughout the film. Phantom Thread is not shy on the symbolism and it suffers more than it helps. It almost seemed like a test for Paul Thomas Anderson to say 'I wonder if I can get away with this and still get an Oscar nomination.' I'm not hating on PTA, I mean he did There Will Be Blood, one of my favorite movies. Daniel Day-Lewis is one of the best, if not the best actor ever and continues to show it. There's not a scene of his acting that I can complain about. I expected such going in.
