Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024)

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is the latest from the SEGA franchise.

It's wonderful that they keep getting Jeff Fowler to come back repeatedly to direct these films. It adds an element of consistency that, let's say, Star Wars didn't have. Fowler will be directing the upcoming The Pink Panther film starring Eddie Murphy. With the Sonic franchise done for now, we could easily see the next universe of films in the coming years.

Jim Carrey plays both Robotniks in the film and is just as goofy as you've come to expect. Keanu Reeves plays Shadow and adds a lot of seriousness to Ben Schwartz's Sonic. Idris Elba and Colleen O'Shaughnessey both shine as supporting characters Knuckles and Tails. There was a surprise character that I wasn't expecting in Krysten Ritter's Director Rockwell. She hasn't aged a bit.

The film entertained from beginning to end and was full of so many Sonic Adventure 2 references. Result: A-

Escape Room (2019)

Escape Room  is presented as a Saw-like game of puzzle solving or your life ends. This time around they remove the gore to get a PG-13 rating and a January release. Adam Robitel is best known as the director of Insidious: The Last Key. Which I 'saw' and meh'd about last year. He also did Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension which I haven't seen. I stopped watching the Paranormal movies after The Marked Ones. There are some camera/direction problems nothing an average movie-goer would notice. Taylor Russell plays the main character Zoey. Don't take any offense, but she has a really hard time going full Aspergers, but once she turns Lara Croft she does a decent job. She also did the over-looked Lost in Space TV series which I still need to watch. I want to see Deborah Ann Woll in more movies after seeing her in this. She was a shining star in this film. She plays a former military survivor with a lot of baggage. You'll remember her as Karen Page from ...

Barbarian (2022)

Barbarian is about a woman staying at an AirBnB and discovers that there is more to the house she has rented than what was expected. Written and Directed by Zach Cregger, Barbarian is the third film behind Miss March and The Civil War on Drugs. Both were forgettable and both were before Cregger knew really how to direct. This change is night and day, almost like how Ben Affleck made the switch over from doing Gili in 2003 to The Town in 2010. The writing is just shy of great. A great horror film will keep you wondering just how things will end. There certainly were moments I was wondering just how Cregger would end this film. There are some predictable scenes and certain directorial choices make you believe for a second that something else is happening entirely. There is one scene of exposition I despised and didn't help the storyline at all except pander to audiences that aren't intelligent. Georgina Campbell plays Tess, the main character. She is expressive and carries the ...

Venom

I went into Venom with really low expectations. I knew Tom Hardy 's accent was a whispering weirdness, and I heard they did some dubbing for how the word "Symbiote" was pronounced and that helped. The film has a lot of technical problems from a directorial aspect. That being said the general movie audience will not notice. The narrative is simple and easy to follow. I imagine most can guess and where it will lead in the end. Tom Hardy doesn't really play   Eddie Brock in a traditional sense of his character but I'm not going to watch Eddie Brock the movie. If I had to place it somewhere along the line of superhero movies I'd put it at #22 right between #23 Watchmen and #21 Ant-Man . It's better than Justice League, BvS, Spider-Man 3, any of the Hulk movies, Thor 1, 2 and much way better than Catwoman. It isn't a turd floating in the wind. It's far from perfect and I walked out not disappointed, but not super hyped either.  B- ...
