The Garfield Movie (2024)

The Garfield Movie is about a cat and his canine friend who reunite with the cat's long-lost father.

Mark Dindal directed the film. You might remember him from directing Chicken Little and the under-rated The Emperor's New Groove. While he hasn't a ton of directorial films he is better known for his visual effects. The screenplay has three credits, which is surprising since the writing is one of the worst aspects of the film. The lesser writers are Paul A. Kaplan and Mark Targove who wrote the George Lopez TV show. While David Reynolds is much better, having written Finding Nemo and Mulan.

Chris Pratt plays Garfield and this isn't his first rodeo in voiceovers having voiced Mario just last year. Samuel L. Jackson who plays Vic also has done voiceovers before doing Incredibles 1 + 2, and  Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank two years ago. The best voice actor has got to be Cicily Strong who voices Marge Malone. She was great.

The film passed the time but was only above average. Result: B-

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

Avatar: The Way of Water  is the followup to James Cameron's original box office winner Avatar. Continuing Jake Sully's story, now protecting his family from Colonel Miles Quaritch again. Written and directed by James Cameron . The worst parts of the writing probably came from the writers of Mulan, both Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. In terms of direction, there was the expectation that Cameron would recreate some sort of magic of Avatar, Terminator 2, or even Aliens. I think Cameron gave the skeleton of the story and Jaffa and Silver added their own dialogue and beats. Cameron doesn't really write boring movies and I was bored through parts of the film. 3 hours and 12 minutes is a long time to have amazing dialogue and writing. Sam Worthington is back but you don't recognize him since he was barely in the first film except in his avatar form. Most people don't know Worthington. Maybe if you played the Call of Duty Black Ops games as he played Alex Mason. I most...

The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023)

The Last Voyage of the Demeter  is based on the captain's log for Bram Stoker's Dracula.  Directed by  André Øvredal, the film could have been as good as his earlier work like Troll Hunter  and The Autopsy of Jane Doe.  This film fails to deliver. Not only with uninteresting scenes, boring dialogue, and unbelievable events but also a lack of horror. The movie just isn't scary one bit. I could probably let my 9-year-old watch this and she would just laugh at the attempts to scare. Corey Hawkins  plays the main character and already at the beginning of the film he's unlikeable, he doesn't grow on you either. You can tell he was just there to sell the diversity of the film, and this will be a blemish on his career. The film also has Liam Cunningham and David Dastmalchian but their side story doesn't go anywhere and you're not really rooting for either one of them to survive. You might know Liam from Game of Thrones  and David from his other horror...

Barbarian (2022)

Barbarian is about a woman staying at an AirBnB and discovers that there is more to the house she has rented than what was expected. Written and Directed by Zach Cregger, Barbarian is the third film behind Miss March and The Civil War on Drugs. Both were forgettable and both were before Cregger knew really how to direct. This change is night and day, almost like how Ben Affleck made the switch over from doing Gili in 2003 to The Town in 2010. The writing is just shy of great. A great horror film will keep you wondering just how things will end. There certainly were moments I was wondering just how Cregger would end this film. There are some predictable scenes and certain directorial choices make you believe for a second that something else is happening entirely. There is one scene of exposition I despised and didn't help the storyline at all except pander to audiences that aren't intelligent. Georgina Campbell plays Tess, the main character. She is expressive and carries the ...
