A Quiet Place: Day One (2024)

A Quiet Place: Day One is a prequel to the hit John Krasinski sci-fi horror.

This time Michael Sarnoski took over writing and directing the film. After his success in directing, little little-known movie, Pig, I imagine Paramount had faith in him to take a stab at the franchise. There was one issue with the water CG and the monsters really have been too crisp and detailed in low light but other than that his writing was kinda of mediocre.

Lupita Nyong'o plays the main character who has some sort of disease. I'm not sure if it was actually declared to be cancer but it was something like that. She plays a jerk through most of the film and her character arc is being nice to this scary cat played by Joseph Quinn. She's expressive even if her character is written to be unlikeable in the beginning.

Speaking of Joseph Quinn he plays a British lawyer who is the most timid lawyer there is. I mean I guess it makes sense that he's British as an American lawyer would have too many stereotypes to overcome but American audiences would believe that a Brit would be a coward in times of stress. He plays it pretty well.

The film has a few jump scares and tries to do a moment of terror but it doesn't pay since the CG was off. Result: B-

Cinderella (2021)

Cinderella is a modern take on the classic tale. This time everything is politically upside down. Written and Directed by Kay Cannon,   Cinderella takes any chance it can to push an agenda. It's nauseating in the forcefulness of the propaganda. It's hard to take any scene that isn't singing seriously. It lives in a dystopian world where anyone who doesn't think progressively like-minded is a fool and shouldn't have joy. The direction is okay, but that's to be expected as she probably picked up some being the producer of the Pitch Perfect trillogy. Camila Cabello  plays Cinderella and her first major film. She can sing and performs well next to her stepmother played by Idina Menzel, who needs no introduction. Surely, she will be in future musicals and I can only hope for one with a better writer. Pierce Brosnan  plays King Rowan and is forceful in his performance but given the point of his character, it's sad to see. Someone had to be the punching bag, and ...

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 (2023)

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3  is the third installment in the Big Fat Greek franchise, this time they're in Greece.  Written, directed, and starring Nia Vardalos, just like the previous films. Now she is being asked to become the head of the family. I imagine if they do a fourth installment that like the other sequels they will never live up to the first one and will have throwbacks you've come to expect now with any sequel. Paris is back, played by Elena Kampouris , she's pretty but her beauty isn't going to draw a crowd, and her counterpart, Elias Kacavas, isn't going to bring in the crowd looking for young eye candy. Both of them haven't been in much and their future doesn't look great either. Stephanie Nur  is a newcomer to this franchise and you might recognize her from 1883  as Melodi. She does a pretty good job with the role that was designed for her. She's not heavily utilized but that was because the franchise has become an ensemble.  Melina Kot...

Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

Avatar: The Way of Water  is the followup to James Cameron's original box office winner Avatar. Continuing Jake Sully's story, now protecting his family from Colonel Miles Quaritch again. Written and directed by James Cameron . The worst parts of the writing probably came from the writers of Mulan, both Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. In terms of direction, there was the expectation that Cameron would recreate some sort of magic of Avatar, Terminator 2, or even Aliens. I think Cameron gave the skeleton of the story and Jaffa and Silver added their own dialogue and beats. Cameron doesn't really write boring movies and I was bored through parts of the film. 3 hours and 12 minutes is a long time to have amazing dialogue and writing. Sam Worthington is back but you don't recognize him since he was barely in the first film except in his avatar form. Most people don't know Worthington. Maybe if you played the Call of Duty Black Ops games as he played Alex Mason. I most...
