Challengers (2024)

Challengers is a tennis drama and love triangle.

I knew the film was going to hit on LGBTQ themes just based on who the director was, Luca Guadagnino. You'll know him from Call Me By Your Name. There's nothing wrong with his editing and camera choices but I would have reshot some scenes with Zendaya.

Zendaya, despite the poster, is frowning pretty much the entire film. She's supposed to be a former tennis player, mother, and wife, but she acts like a spoiled brat. I don't believe the director intended her to be disliked at the beginning as the film makes her out to be the victim of circumstance and patriarchy.

Mike Faist and Josh O'Connor play the two men in the love triangle. It's not your traditional love triangle. They have a hard time selling being attracted to her but easily sell that they're attracted to each other.

The score was distracting and the writing was erotic fantasy with a super drawn-out ending. The film doesn't understand tennis and has a warped sense of modern-day dating. Result: D

It Lives Inside (2023)

It Lives Inside is a low-budget horror film about a demonic Indian spirit.  Written and directed by Bishal Dutta  for a modern audience. I imagine he draws upon personal experiences for a film like this. I'm not talking about the demonic part but perhaps fitting into the US education system. There were some progressive talking points that seemed wedged into the film, the main character even talks about homogeneous cultures at one point with her teacher. There were some good empathetic scenes once the introductions were over, especially about going against your mother's wishes to go to a party with someone she wouldn't approve of.  Megan Suri plays the main character Sam. She's infatuated with Russ played by Gage Marsh . He's probably best known for being in Batwoman the TV show. You might remember Megan from a movie called Missing. She does a pretty good job here since she's given a lot to work with. Dutta has some good horror moments for her to work with whi...

White Men Can't Jump (2023)

White Men Can't Jump  is a remake of the 1992 film, this time with a more modern story. There are two screenplay writers on this film, Kenya Barris and Doug Hall .   Barris and Hall  are known for Black-ish so take that for what you will. Barris also did Coming 2 America and is much more prolific .   Ron Shelton was brought on to help keep the bones of the original there. The writing isn't horrible but it isn't anything special. The director is Calmatic who isn't really known for movies as he's a music video director having done that Old Town Road song. There were some scenes I would have reshot but overall decent job. After seeing The Blackening  earlier this year I was going to compare Sinqua Walls then and now. He's much better in this film as Kamal. He is also given a lot more to work with in this film with the beautiful  Teyana Taylor playing his wife. She's great and believable.  Jack Harlow is dating Laura Harrier,  and playing the titula...

Roma (2018)

Roma  is about the life of an upper-class family living in Mexico seen through the eyes of a servant in the 1970s. Written and directed by Alfonso Cuarón . Cuarón was born in Mexico and has even said that this film depicts a lot of his childhood. It certainly has a feel like Y Tu Mama Tambien. More average moviegoers might recognize his name from the movie Gravity where he won his first Oscar. He also did the underappreciated Children of Men. The cast is mostly unknowns. The main character is named Cleo and is played by Yalitza Aparicio . She is wonderful and stoic. She is reserved in her emotions to make them more impactful when they do rise to the surface. Her character has to put up with a lot of shit, literally. Her life goes from bad to worse throughout the movie. At the end of the movie, you'll be attached to this maid. The first part is hard to watch because it's just setting up future moments. At the time it just feels like you're watching a ...
