Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken (2023)

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken is the latest animated film by Dreamworks.

Directed by Kirk DeMicco and Faryn Pearl, the film is focused on a teenage girl trying to go to prom with her love interest. The movie has a lot of great shots, intentional zooms, and transitions that made for an enjoyable experience, plus the emotional animation helps.

The writers are Pam Brady, Brian C. Brown, and Elliot Diguiseppi. To be progressive the girl is asking the boy and as a teacher, I've asked my students this question. Many believe that it's still the boy's responsibility to ask out the girl. Not sure whose idea it was but I'm not sure if teenage Texans are going to entertain that idea in today's USA.

Lana Condor is Ruby and I haven't heard her voice enough to know it was her. She was from Alita: Battle Angel, To All the Boys I've Loved Before, and X-Men: Apocalypse as Jubilee. On the other hand, Jane Fonda and Toni Collette's voices are easily recognizable and fit the role they are being asked to voice. They are Grandmamah and Ruby's mother. Another voice you'll recognize if you listen closely is that of Will Forte as Gordon Lighthouse. Forte will forever be The Last Man on Earth and MacGruber for me. Also, Annie Murphy from Schitt's Creek plays the vain villain in the movie and her voice always had that when she was Alexis Rose. Ew David.

The film is better than okay, and better than anything Disney has put out in the animation department in a long while. It's certainly Above Average. B-

Last Night in Soho (2021)

Last Night in Soho is a horror movie, surprisingly. It's also directed by Edgar Wright. Is this a dream? Someone, please make sense to me how this got made. Written and directed by Edgar Wright , Soho is about a fashion designer who without spoiling the film starts to uncover a murder mystery from the 1960s and has to make sense of it all. It has everything you want from Wright's  transitions and self-references but missing the comedy of his previous films. I feel like this movie was made on a dare much in the same way American Graffiti was made.  Thomasin McKenzie  has really developed as an actress both in her ability to convey emotion but also with how she loses herself in the role. The last time I saw her was in Jojo Rabbit and True History of the Kelly Gang and I look forward to The Power of the Dog later this year. She plays the main character and does a wonderful job with her accent too. I can't go into detail about what happens to her without spoiling the...

Glass (2019)

Glass  is the final in the Unbreakable trilogy. This time Mr. Glass finally sees his masterminded plot to fruition. Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan , Glass is about...well it's about these superheroes. They are supposed to be, at least that's the question throughout the film. It's a hesitation that really cuts the film down from being better. Bruce Willis  returns as David Dunn from Unbreakable. He's better in this than he has been as of recent. That's not saying much, he doesn't really do much of importance. Samuel L. Jackson  returns as Mr. Glass who for most of the film he's just sitting there doing nothing. The film is called class but really it's more about James McAvoy's character in the first half of the movie. James McAvoy plays the same characters from Split. He's great at changing over and switching between them but I got enough of that in Split. After a while, I was just waiting for other characters to d...

Leo (2023)

Leo is about an old lizard who wants to have his one last hurrah before he gets too old to do his bucket list. This is another in the long line of Adam Sandler movies for Netflix that his contract requires him to do. In 2020, Sandler got another quarter of a million dollar deal with Netflix to do four more movies since his view count was so monumental over other Netflix original movies. While watching the movie you can tell it's Sandler's humor and he hires his usual friends to voice act in this animated family film. With Disney failing and Illumination taking hold of families, it's nice that there is room for Happy Madison Productions to put in good work. Sandler  puts on a voice for Leo that is goofy in his own right. Bill Burr plays his best bud Squirtle the turtle.  Cecily Strong, from Saturday Night Live, plays the substitute teacher, she really sells the mean old lady. Another couple of voices you'll recognize were Siendfeld's Jason Alexander as the entitle...
