Alice, Darling (2023)

Alice, Darling is about an abusive relationship and an intervention staged by her friends.

Mary Nighy directs this, her first feature film. She had done shorts and tv series before this. There were many scenes that felt they could have been reshot as many details of the film feel like they were shot on the first take. Also, that last name might seem familiar and yes she's Bill Nighy's daughter. I wanted her to succeed if only because we have the same birthday.

Anna Kendrick plays Alice and the movie constantly shames her for working out and eating less. While on the other hand, Wunmi Mosaku's character is overweight and the film doesn't seem to think that's a problem. It's a big part of the film fills the time before they get to the real villain of the film. Her boyfriend is played by Charlie Carrick. He's another tv show actor and should stay there. He's unconvincing and lowers the quality of the film which each scene he's in.

The film was hard to get through. It's pretty bad. D+

Last Night in Soho (2021)

Last Night in Soho is a horror movie, surprisingly. It's also directed by Edgar Wright. Is this a dream? Someone, please make sense to me how this got made. Written and directed by Edgar Wright , Soho is about a fashion designer who without spoiling the film starts to uncover a murder mystery from the 1960s and has to make sense of it all. It has everything you want from Wright's transitions and self-references but missing the comedy of his previous films. I feel like this movie was made on a dare much in the same way American Graffiti was made. Thomasin McKenzie has really developed as an actress both in her ability to convey emotion but also with how she loses herself in the role. The last time I saw her was in Jojo Rabbit and True History of the Kelly Gang and I look forward to The Power of the Dog later this year. Roma (2018)

Roma is about the life of an upper-class family living in Mexico seen through the eyes of a servant in the 1970s. Written and directed by Alfonso Cuarón . Cuarón was born in Mexico and has even said that this film depicts a lot of his childhood. It certainly has a feel like Y Tu Mama Tambien. More average moviegoers might recognize his name from the movie Gravity where he won his first Oscar. He also did the underappreciated Children of Men. The cast is mostly unknowns. The main character is named Cleo and is played by Yalitza Aparicio . She is wonderful and stoic. She is reserved in her emotions to make them more impactful when they do rise to the surface. Her character has to put up with a lot of shit, literally. Her life goes from bad to worse throughout the movie. At the end of the movie, you'll be attached to this maid. Cinderella (2021)

Cinderella is a modern take on the classic tale. This time everything is politically upside down. Written and Directed by Kay Cannon, Cinderella takes any chance it can to push an agenda. It's nauseating in the forcefulness of the propaganda. It's hard to take any scene that isn't singing seriously. It lives in a dystopian world where anyone who doesn't think progressively like-minded is a fool and shouldn't have joy. The direction is okay, but that's to be expected as she probably picked up some being the producer of the Pitch Perfect trillogy. Camila Cabello plays Cinderella and her first major film. She can sing and performs well next to her stepmother played by Idina Menzel, who needs no introduction. Surely, she will be in future musicals and I can only hope for one with a better writer.
