The Toxic Avenger (2025)

The Toxic Avenger (2025) is directed and written by Macon Blair, who is better known as an actor than a filmmaker, with notable roles in Green Room and Blue Ruin. His writing and direction lean into the over-the-top chaos expected from a Toxic Avenger remake, embracing absurdity with confidence even if not every choice lands cleanly.

Peter Dinklage, best known for Game of Thrones and Cyrano, takes on the strange task of grounding this bizarre film and succeeds in making it entertaining. His ability to balance seriousness with the absurd tone gives the movie its core strength.

Taylour Paige, known for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, injects charisma into her role, making her presence one of the film’s highlights.

Kevin Bacon, with decades of work including Footloose and Mystic River, delivers his usual charm, clearly enjoying himself in the chaos. He plays the films big bad.

Elijah Wood, who audiences know from The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Sin City, is surprisingly effective as Fritz. He leans into the weirdness and makes a lasting impression with the limited material he’s given.

The film entertains and has some comedic moments. Result: B-

  Bugonia is Yorgos Lanthimos ' fifth film that I've seen. This time it's about a woman abducted by two conspiratorial men who think she's an alien from the galaxy of Andromeda. Lanthimos  had a wild ride with Poor Things and The Lobster . While Kinds of Kindness and The Favourite were more tame, Bugonia  is a wild ride from beginning to end and is so tightly written and directed that there are no scenes that are out of place or unintentional. Perhaps it's the screenplay done by the writer of The Menu  which I still need to see. Perhaps it was source material done by Jang Joon-hwan  who hasn't really done much in America, though looking at the movie Save the Green Planet!  it doesn't appear to be so. While the direction and writing is superb the film wouldn't be anything without the amazing performance of the postered woman, Emma Stone. Roofman (2025)

Roofman (2025) is written and directed by Derek Cianfrance , known for co-writing Sound of Metal and directing The Place Beyond the Pines . While the story’s real-life basis limits the emotional depth and narrative creativity compared to his earlier work, Cianfrance still manages to build tension and authenticity through grounded character work and realistic pacing. The direction shows his skill in capturing human struggle, though it doesn’t reach the same heights as his past projects. Channing Tatum , who both produces and stars, delivers a solid performance. While it doesn’t demand the same emotional intensity as Foxcatcher or the boldness of Blink Twice , Tatum’s portrayal of the titular Roofman carries genuine effort and restraint. He manages to evoke empathy without leaning too heavily on dramatics, showing a maturity in his acting that’s commendable. Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere (2025) is written and directed by Scott Cooper , known for Crazy Heart and Hostiles . Cooper brings his usual grounded, character-focused direction to this film, capturing both the grit and quiet poetry of Bruce Springsteen’s life and music. Even for those who aren’t fans of “The Boss,” the film works as an emotional drama about artistry, loss, and self-reflection. Jeremy Allen White , best known for The Bear and The Iron Claw , disappears into his portrayal. At times, he’s nearly unrecognizable in both appearance and delivery. White manages to balance intensity with vulnerability, showing a man who’s haunted yet deeply passionate.
