The Wedding Ringer is a comedy directed by Jeremy Garelick. In this movie, Doug is a lonely, heavyset man who manages to catch a beautiful woman. It's basically The Simpsons. Well, not really. It's about Doug's need for a best man and groomsmen for his wedding since he believes that her love for him would falter if he didn't have any friends. He hires Jimmy to get a bunch of groomsmen and to be his best man.
Jeremy Garelick isn't really known for much except maybe The Breakup. This is his first chance to direct and write a major movie. The direction isn't bad, there were some technical issues that most of the movie-going audience won't notice. The events in this film go from zero to a hundred really quick. The score makes it worse I've noticed too. The comedy just doesn't land with me.
Doug is played by Josh Gad, and he's firmly cementing himself as a comedic actor that doesn't make me laugh. He also plays pretty much the same character you expect him to play in all of his movies. (Exception: Frozen) When he's got the spotlight I found myself sighing just waiting for his lines to be over.
Kevin Hart is once again showing his talent as a fast talking comedian. I found most of his standup early in his career to be the best. Now it's more repetative, sometimes annoying. Thankfully it's not too annoying in this film. Hart's films are a 50-50. This is unfortunately a disappointing performance.
Kaley Cuoco plays the bride. She plays pretty much the same character as Penny in the Big Bang Theory. I didn't expect much out of her and it seems this is just a pay-day for her. Nothing to really say that she has range as an actress.
There are scenes that are just used to fill time. Dance sequences, football, car chase, partying. This relates to bad writing and direction. The football scene I think uses the same music as Rudy which makes me dislike the scene even further.
Result: D (Zero laughs and boring)
