Blackhat (2015)

Blackhat (2015) is a film about cybersecurity and the hacker who is released from prison to help deal with a serious incident in China.

Blackhat is directed by Michael Mann, the same...man...who brought you Heat, The Insider, Ali, and Collateral to name a few. So he isn't a nobody, but for some reason, this film seems like a direct to DVD film. Maybe it was the writing department since the writer of the film doesn't have much writing to his name, Morgan Davis Foehl. Yeah, I had never heard of him either. The credits he does have is being in the editorial department as an assistant editor for Click and I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Lady. Two strikes against him in my book.

Nick Hathaway, played by Chris Hemsworth, is a prisoner, so that explains why he's super buff. Oh and he's also a hacker. When I think hacker, that's what first comes to mind, Chris Hemsworth. He doesn't really have much to work with and just looks confused most of the movie.

Holt McCallany is also in the film. He's used to being a background character. I first remember him from Fight Club. He's forgettable in this film and that's sad since he has acting talent, watch him in Mindhunter on Netflix.

Blackhat came out in January three years ago and many people have forgotten it. Here's a reminder why you've never rewatched this film. It's pretty bad. Oh and one more thing, the CG is horrible, almost worse than FreddieW level blood splatter effects.

Result: D+ (It's hard to watch because it's supposed to be suspenseful when actually it's quite boring)

Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025)

Avatar: Fire and Ash is the third film in the James Cameron sci-fi epic.  What can be said about Christopher Nolan can be said about James Cameron , except Cameron makes billions of dollars while Nolan makes hundreds of millions. Oppenheimer came close though. Generation Z will not understand how impactful Titanic was but so many of them understand and went to see the first  Avatar. Sam Worthington  and Zoe SaldaƱa  return as the king and queen warlords of the Na'vi. This time they got whales and squids on their side. That might sound an awful lot like the second movie and you'd be right. This film adds more to the lore but pretty much tells the same story.  Oona Chaplin , of Game of Throne fame, is on fire as Varang. She's beautiful and joker level crazy with her pyromania. Her existence is really just to sell the dichotomy of this film and the second, but she was still enthralling never the less. Also the soap opera love between her and the main vill...

Him (2025)

Him (2025) is directed by Justin Tipping , best known for Kicks , with Jordan Peele serving as a heavy-handed producer. Despite the talent involved, the film leans into “and then” style writing that feels meandering and leaves the audience more tired than engaged. Marlon Wayans , known for White Chicks and Scary Movie , goes over the top in a way that doesn’t fit the film’s intent, creating more distraction than humor or depth. Tyriq Withers , previously in I Know What You Did Last Summer , turns in an even weaker performance here, offering little in the way of presence or believability. Julia Fox , who gained recognition for Uncut Gems , is strange and out of place, adding little to the narrative. Jim Jefferies , a comedian known for Legit , is barely given anything to work with, and his limited screen time wastes his talent. I found myself bored and not surprised. There is also a bit of sacrilegious writing that might turn off some audiences. Result: C+

Leo (2023)

Leo is about an old lizard who wants to have his one last hurrah before he gets too old to do his bucket list. This is another in the long line of Adam Sandler movies for Netflix that his contract requires him to do. In 2020, Sandler got another quarter of a million dollar deal with Netflix to do four more movies since his view count was so monumental over other Netflix original movies. While watching the movie you can tell it's Sandler's humor and he hires his usual friends to voice act in this animated family film. With Disney failing and Illumination taking hold of families, it's nice that there is room for Happy Madison Productions to put in good work. Sandler  puts on a voice for Leo that is goofy in his own right. Bill Burr plays his best bud Squirtle the turtle.  Cecily Strong, from Saturday Night Live, plays the substitute teacher, she really sells the mean old lady. Another couple of voices you'll recognize were Siendfeld's Jason Alexander as the entitle...
