The Wasp (2024)

 


The Wasp is a thriller based on the play of the same name. The trailer would have you think that a wife hires her childhood friend to murder her husband.

Directed by Guillem Morales, the film is pretty, well shot, and directed. I never had seen any of his other movies but his choice to keep most of the movie in the living room of the wife was an interesting choice. Morgan Lloyd Malcolm wrote the film as well as a few episodes of Obsession. The dialogue started off kinda bad but then turned around before the halfway point.

Naomie Harris was given a lot to work with when it comes to dialogue. She really just was given full reign to just act and show off. It does feel like this is an actor's dream role for showing the world that she can act. It's not an Oscar-worthy performance, but it did leave an impact. This is one step towards an Oscar though.

The beautiful Natalie Dormer should really be in more movies. She's so charismatic and interesting to watch. Plus all of her roles have felt different. She has an x-factor that I think most people will agree with even if they didn't see Game of Thrones.

This film was a pleasant surprise. Result: B

Idiots is written and directed by Macon Blair , who also has a small role in the film. The movie feels like Pineapple Express with more character development but worse pacing. There are some genuinely funny scenes that made me laugh out loud, and for a comedy, that's ultimately what it should be aiming for. Blair clearly understands how to write absurd situations and characters, but the film has several pacing problems, with scenes that could have been cut without hurting the overall story. When it works, though, the comedy lands and the character development gives the film more substance than expected. Insidious: Out of the Further (2026)

Insidious: Out of the Further is written and directed by Jacob Chase , who has made some solid shorts in the past but is making the first major motion picture of his that I've seen. There is very little to criticize about his direction, particularly when it comes to setting up scares. Chase understands how to build tension and makes especially good use of the film's more claustrophobic scenes, creating an uncomfortable atmosphere without relying entirely on cheap jump scares. The direction and horror setup are the film's strongest elements, even if the overall story doesn't quite reach the level needed for a full recommendation. Amelia Eve delivers a performance that feels reminiscent of Naomi Watts in The Ring . She channels that same exhausted and increasingly desperate energy, making her character feel convincing as the supernatural events escalate around her. The Creator (2023)

The Creator  is a film that once again tries to warn the audience of the dangers of artificial intelligence. Director, Gareth Edwards, seems to only write movies where it's a band of military folks, freedom fighters, or terrorists who against all odds get the job done see: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, The Creator, and Monsters.  John David Washington was quickly becoming a Hollywood go-to actor, but after the mediocre response to Tenant and now the lack of an audience for The Creator  his bankability is going down. Sure he was great in the Blackkklansman, but it wasn't his acting that made that movie what it was. He has a hard time showing emotion other than stoicism. This might be why he's leaving the action/sci-fi scene and going back to Oscar bait with his next movie: The Piano Lesson.
